“My reasons for joining Perform weren’t the ones you’d expect for a guy who had just turned 30. I’d had two hip replacements in two years, due to arthritis in both hips. I’d lost my regular fitness level over the past six to eight years due to the pain I was experiencing. When I decided to join Perform I was at rock bottom in terms of fitness levels, practically having to learn to walk again after the operations I’d had.

“It was actually starting to train for the Edinburgh Marathon that made me realise I really needed to get fit. At first I struggled to run a mile without stopping and being out of breath.

My general fitness had gone downhill after having my daughter in November 2016. Until then I’d used a local gym, just doing the usual resistance machines and dumbbell curls, but I had no idea what I was doing and I did the same thing every night. Even that stopped once the baby arrived though.

“My main aim when I started training was to lose weight, tone up, get fit and become more mobile. I’d followed Peter from a previous gym. He had trained me but due to being a electrician running my own business and my father falling ill something had to give and it was the gym.

Meal prep for normal people

Meal prep like a normal person

Hands up if you’re fed up of seeing meal prep posts on social media urging you to “prep like a boss” alongside neat rows of tupperware containing the same, presumably nutritious yet unappetising-looking slop. Or those insta-famous meal preppers that tell you it’s EASY to prep a week’s worth of meals – different dishes every other day at least – that look like gourmet fare from a high end restaurant. What about those macro-balanced meal delivery services that are popping up across the city to make healthy, balanced eating easy and enjoyable (but pretty tough on your wallet)?

We aren’t being haters here. If it works for you, any of the above are fine. It’s just that most of us aren’t made to ‘prep like a boss’.

The truth about willpower

January 10, 2019
willpower waning

Is your willpower waning? Diet and fitness resolutions not quite going to plan while you’re back at work, or just generally back to the normal grind?

My first advice? Don’t panic, don’t give up and don’t think that having willpower is something you’re just not capable of.

You see, as pointed out in a great feature in The Guardian today, willpower is waved in front of us like a mysterious talent. Something only a gifted few have.

But that’s just not the case. Willpower is a skill that can be practised and improved. Maybe you’ll never hit 100%, but you CAN move on from where you are now.

“As a Personal Trainer there’s obviously always an expectation that you’ll have a high standard of fitness. However, we don’t all train all day every day and we don’t all eat our meals out of tupperware boxes, never allowing ourselves to overindulge in unhealthy treats.

We also very rarely get asked about why we got into fitness, with people often assuming we got into the profession while training for other sports, trying to ‘get big’ or in pursuit of the perfect shirtless Instagram post.

Truth is, I got into fitness because I learned very early on that life is short.

“I was very health conscious in my teens and early 20s and I played a lot of sport to quite high levels when I was at school and university.

However, this gradually got less and less as my career started to take priority. Running a number of companies having been in IT for many years, my work has always involved a lot of travelling and meeting/ office based work on a laptop. I had also faced some longer standing issues with knees, hips and lower back from old sports injuries, none of which had recovered properly or been helped by my working lifestyle.

SMART pre-Christmas fitness goals

Christmas decorations are going up, supermarket shelves are stacked high with mince pies, Baileys and other festive treats. You’ve probably got boozy or food-filled celebrations planned with work, friends and family from now until New Year’s Day.

It hardly seems like the time to be setting fitness goals, does it?

When I initially started training at Perform I believed I was just signing up to lose a bit of weight and get a bit fitter. However, looking back it was actually much more than that.

Perform Fitness Family Alex G's Fitness Story

Honestly, I’d never set foot in a gym until 2015. I joined Perform properly at the start of 2018 as a way of building on work I had already done to lose eight stone. Before then walking had been my main form of exercise.

I later joined another gym and did one session a week, as a way of keeping the weight off and ensuring I didn’t get complacent. Although I had made progress I still felt tired and miserable a lot of the time, so I decided to start training properly. I wanted to push myself a little harder and find support from like-minded people.
