Honestly, I’d never set foot in a gym until 2015. I joined Perform properly at the start of 2018 as a way of building on work I had already done to lose eight stone. Before then walking had been my main form of exercise.

I later joined another gym and did one session a week, as a way of keeping the weight off and ensuring I didn’t get complacent. Although I had made progress I still felt tired and miserable a lot of the time, so I decided to start training properly. I wanted to push myself a little harder and find support from like-minded people.

I knew Aaron from my previous gym, which I how I found out about Perform. Like most people starting a new gym, I was most worried about what it would be like, whether I would know what I was doing and if I would get along with people.

As I was nervous, I arranged to pop in for a few one to one training sessions with Aaron before I joined properly in January. Everyone, members and staff, were lovely and supportive so it wasn’t long before I decided I had definitely made the right choice.

The gym is great, with really high quality, sturdy and comfortable equipment that I feel confident pushing myself on. However, it’s the support is the best thing about Perform. The personal trainers are always there if you need them, even if it’s just for a general chat about things. I’ve also never met PTs who know their stuff in as much detail as the guys do.

When it comes to other members, I haven’t encountered a single person that hasn’t been friendly and easy to talk to. Sometimes I find it a struggle to finish a workout and everyone else on the session will cheer me on to get me through. They’re all there for you as well.

There are, of course, some days when I don’t really want to train, but once I’m there I enjoy myself. The people at Perform, PTs and clients, are what make it great – I always have a laugh. The majority of the time I actually look forward to pushing myself – that’s something I never in my life thought I’d feel about exercise!

I think the amount of time and effort that goes in to writing new and exciting programs, the variety of exercises, the availability of classes, the nutrition advice and the assessments mean that Perform offers anything you could want no matter what your goals are.

I know I have toned up as lots of people have commented that I look like I’ve lost weight even when I don’t feel like much has changed. I can also lift weights and complete workouts that I was never able to even think about lifting a few months ago.

My long term goal is to lose more weight, but right now I’m happy with feeling fitter, toning up and improving my mental health while doing so. I still have my tough days with my health but overall I feel so much better in myself and I can confidently say it’s the fittest I’ve ever been at any point in my life.

For anyone thinking about joining, I’d suggest doing one of the trials to see if it’s for you or just come along and ask any questions that you have. Whatever you want to achieve you’ll be supported and cheered on by absolutely everyone.
